Artist of the Week: Nena

I must say youtube is really becoming my go to social media network for new music, more so than Myspace. This past week I re-discovered an old childhood favorite of mine or should I say two old childhood favorites?

This video I just posted is a updated version of Nena's Irgendwie,Irgendwo, Irgendwann.

The first clip is an updated version (in 2003) features '80s English pop star Kim Wilde who sings some of the lyrics in english. Before work, I downloaded the album that the updated version from itunes. What strikes me is how America has virtually ignored Nena after her smash hit "99 Luftballoons".

I personally think it is a crime that America brushed her off as a one hit wonder when she has made equally catchy songs in the new wave/synthpop vein. Nena recently shot a video for a duet she collaborated with ex-Wolfsheim vocalist Peter Heppner.

For a woman who is 50 years old and a grandmother, Nena looks amazing. She doesn't even look remotely 40 IMHO.

What I am currently listening to

Chandeen: Teenage Poetry

I finally got around to buying Teenage Poetry after listening to a few songs off the album on youtube. I absolutely freaking love it. I find the music so soothing and relaxing to listen to after I get home from work.

Beauty 2: Music That Touches the Soul

This is a compilation available only through Barnes and Noble. Apparently Neurodisc has struck an exclusive distribution deal with B&N so you won't be able to find a copy anywhere else. The music is a collection of electronica, folk, and classical music. I think it is worth checking out. I really dug the tracks by Blue Stone, Joanna Stevens, Chandeen, and Zoe Johnston.

Faithless: Sunday 8pm

Last weekend I went to The Electric Fetus to find a birthday gift for my father. I found a used copy of one of my all time favorite electronica albums Sunday 8pm by Faithless, and the limited edition featuring a second disc of remixes. I sold my copy years ago for much needed cash. I immediately bought the cd for $5. I almost forgot just how good this album is. All of the songs still sounds fresh and invigorating as I first heard it over ten years ago.

Artist of the week: Minerve

I was perusing A Different Drum records website tonight (after receiving the latest email update from Todd earlier today). I saw that Angelzoom has a new album out so I decided that I had to get that and maybe something else. Well I found another futurepop/synthpop band that is as good as the Italian band Blume, this latest find is the German band Minerve. I have to admit I was contemplating getting the new Code 64 album but after I started hearing samples of the new Minerve album, I knew Code 64 could wait. Here are some samples of music by Minerve.

Ashbury Heights

Well one of my favorite bands broke up a few days ago. The Swedish synthpop band Ashbury Heights announced that they were breaking up. Anders explains why he is disbanding AH. It is a damn shame that Out of Line isn't willing to let him get out of their contract, much less has been struggling to make a decent living as Ashbury Heights. On the other hand, maybe this break up will lead to bigger and better things for Anders. So in honor of Ashbury Heights, I am posting a few clips of my favorite AH songs.

Mix tape

The other day I was inspired by this article from NPR on cassette tapes. I scrounged around my bedroom and found a couple of unused blank cassette tapes. I thought it would be fun if I went down memory lane and made myself a mix tape even though making mix tapes is essentially outdated and so 1980s. LOL! But you know what? I had fun. It did bring back memories of my childhood of making mix tapes. Here is my unnamed mix tape:

Side A
01. "I Am Running" - IAMX
02. "Refuse (Acoustic Mix)" - Android Lust
03. "The Teardrop Collector" - Anything Box
04. "First Train Home" - Imogen Heap
05. "Hope (Acoustic)" - Blue October UK
06. "Lovesong" - Endless Blue
07. "Elements" - Necessary Response
08. "Snowflake" - Scarlet Slipping
09. "The Hardest Walk" - The Jesus and Mary Chain

Side B
01. "I'm So Lonely I Could Cry" - Johnny Cash w/Nick Cave
02. "All My Lovers" - Autumn
03. "Freeways" - Leiahdorus
04. "Club Montepulciano" - Hooverphonic
05. Temptation" - New Order
06. "Blue Room" - Kirlian Camera
07. "Here Comes the Rain Again" - The Cruxshadows
08. "Anchor" - Bella Koshka
09. "Broken Fingers" - iN[s]CissorS

I am including clips of some of the songs from youtube.

What I am currently listening to

Delerium: Voice Acoustic

This is a collection of Delerium's hit songs stripped down to the bare essentials. You can get a cd copy at B&N where Delerium has an exclusive deal with them which I found to be bullshit. I hate B&N. They are grossly overpriced IMO. As for the album itself, I like it even the horrid "Dust in Gravity" and overplayed "Silence". It is really interesting to hear songs like "Silence" and "Innocente" in a more stripped down, sparse sound. I think it is worth getting for Delerium fans. I do wish that they included my personal favorite Delerium song of all time "A Poem of Byzantium".

Concrete Blonde: Bloodletting

Over the weekend I made a trip to Cheapo records left with a few cds. One of them was Concrete Blonde's Bloodletting album.I used to have a cassette version of this album years ago but I mistakenly sold it with a bunch of cassettes. I almost forgot how much I love this album. Johnette Napalitano has an amazing and unique voice. Truly one of the best modern rock albums from the '90s.

Flesh Field: Strain

Last week I won a copy of Strain by Flesh Field. Awesome industrial music.

Claire Voyant: Time and the Maiden

Last year I bought Lustre by Claire Voyant and loved it. On my most recent trip to Cheapo records, I found a copy of the band's Time and the Maiden. I have to admit as much as I love Victoria Lloyd's vocals, I am not feeling this album.

Rain Fell Within: Refuge

This was the other cd I bought on my latest trip to Cheapo. I kinda figured that it was a gothic metal band judging by the photograph on the back of the cd case. For an American gothic metal band, Rain Fell Within certainly reminded me a lot of my favorite European gothic metal bands. Unfortunately Rain Fell Within's music is pretty monotonous.
