Playlist Of The Week for 10.31.16 - 11.06.16

Since it is Halloween, I figured for this week's playlist it would be a Halloween themed playlist. The selection is pretty predictable but super fun to listen to. Enjoy!

My Current Favorite Songs

Got a mix bag of songs that I have been enjoying a lot lately. I guess with the days becoming shorter and the temperatures getting cooler, my taste in music has been all over the place.

Album Of The Week: Twin Cities Electropunk Vol.8

For this week's pick for Album Of The Week, I chose the latest volume in the long running series Twin Cities Electropunk (Vol.8). This is a local series in the twin cities that has been going on for 12 years. These compilations is a great example of how diverse the local music scene is here in the Twin Cities and shows that there is much more to it than just Prince and The Jayhawks. Other than those who are part of the underground scene here in the Twin Cities, I don't think the rest of the Twin Cities is aware of the electro punk scene.

After a three year hiatus, the series picks up where Vol.7 left off. Most of the bands on volume eight are completely new to me. The few I am familiar are Avenpitch, MY ZERO, as/of, kether, betaEight, Albuterol, Promidal, The Trapezoids, OneNeoEon. The music is quite diverse, ranging from aggrotech to synth-rock. I am going to be genuinely honest when I say that not all of the tracks really appealed to my ears but those were few and far between and keep in my this is just my personal opinion. Everyone's taste in music is not the same. I would say I liked about 95% of the album especially tracks by Avenpitch, MY ZERO, Promidal (duh!), Uber Cool Kung Fu, Albuterol, as/of, and St.Anthony Falls. I certainly would recommend checking out this latest compilation in the TC Electropunk series as well as previous compilations. If anything, the Twin Cities Electropunk series should broaden listeners' minds to the music scene in the Twin Cities.

I wish I could have gone to the CD release party but I was out of town last month for my two concerts. The TC Electropunk shows are always fun to attend. The timing this year was awful for me.

I have included below links to some of the bands one can hear on the compilation.

Playlist of the Week for 10.24.16 - 10.30.16

Last night I got the inspiration to create a playlist of my favorite cover songs by various artists and bands and this is the results of my hard work. It is a mix bag. My personal favorite tracks on the list is Alison Krauss's version of "When You Say Nothing At All" By Keith Whitley and Sarah McLachlan's version of "The Rainbow Connection", two beautiful songs.

Albums and Playlists I Am Currently Listening to

Albums:

Out of curiosity, I had to check out the new Lady Gaga album. Sadly enough to say, I can't get the ten minutes of my life I wasted on this garbage back.

I ended up switching to the new Lizzo album, this I totally dig. Love the '70s r and b/disco vibe. So proud of the fact that she calls Minneapolis home. She could have moved to one of either coasts when she signed to Atlanta records but she didn't.

My Current Favorite Songs

Here is this week's playlist of my current favorite songs. This week I have been listening a lot to my Bangles and Belinda Carlisle/Go Go's playlists. I also been listening to Roseanne Cash's album The Wheel, one of my favorite albums from the '90s. She has such a knack for songwriting, just like her late father Johnny Cash. Of course I just had to include a Loreena McKennitt song after seeing her last night at the State Theatre. Right now though my personal favorite song is "Singing Dead Men" by Blutengel. Just been listening to the hell out of it all week.

My Top 10 Guilty Pleasures Of The Week

It is Wednesday and best of all I am going to see Loreena McKennitt tonight. If anything like the last concert back in 2007, she'll ask the audience to not take any pictures during the show which I can respect her wishes. I'll certainly take a picture of where I am sitting before the show begins. I am sitting on the main floor off to the side but near the stage. Anyhoo...here is this week's top 10 guilty pleasures of mine for the week.

Album Of The Week: Inertial Fault by Voicecoil

There are not many shows that I don't go to and then end up kicking my ass for missing but last week's Voicecoil show at The Saloon was definitely one of those few shows. Unfortunately personal finances took precedent :\. That said I have been listening to their latest album Inertial Fault incessantly and completely digging every second I listen to the album. If you haven't heard it, check it out.

Playlist of the Week for 10.17.16 - 10.23.16

For this week's playlist, I chose to share my playlist of Autumn's two albums The Hating Tree and Return to the Breath. Unfortunately the band's two albums are sold out. What copies you can find online (i.e Amazon) are not cheap, especially The Hating Tree. Both albums are excellent examples of darkwave/goth music. The band is even more amazing live. Here is some old footage I took at a show they performed many moons ago at Ground Zero.

Funny thing that happened during the band's set is two douchebags started fighting during the band's set. I still remember seeing the fight break out, right up there with the two other morons moshing during Faith and The Muse's set that night. I kept getting knocked over by those two clowns. Don't remember what happened to them but I know I was pissed off. LOL!  Anyways you can catch Autumn live again next month as opening act for UZZA at UZZA's CD Release Party at Day Block Brewing Company.

Office Playlist of the Week

It is Sunday afternoon, so not excited that tomorrow is Monday but on the upside it is a three day work week for me and I am seeing Loreena McKennitt on Wednesday night. With a short work week coming up, I am most likely going to listen to a lot of my playlists on Spotify.

Playlists:
Singers/Songwriters and Everyone Else (a new playlist I recently threw together)

Guilty Pleasures (I have updated this playlist)

Albums:
Loreena McKennitt: The Visit, The Mask and the Mirror, and Book of Secrets

Playlists:

This past week I was quite inspired to create a few playlists: VNV Nation, The Bangles, and Belinda Carlisle/The Go Go's. I have been really listening a lot to my Bangles and Belinda Carlisle/The Go Go's playlists. No matter how old their songs are, I can never get sick of listening to their music, especially The Bangles who was my favorite band in the '80s. Everything was and still is my favorite album by The Bangles. I just loved the way the band harmonized. When Michael Steele retired from music, the band's music has never been the same again. As for Belinda Carlisle and The Go Go's. I loved The Go Go's but I always preferred Belinda's solo work a bit more. And what can I really say about VNV Nation? Still one of my favorite bands ever.

I am really sorry I didn't go to the Voicecoil show this past week but personal finances came first (that and I had horrible insomnia the night before and just wanted to go to bed early). I have though been listening to their latest album Inertial Fault quite a bit. It is really good. I definitely recommend giving it a listen.

Definitely enjoying the latest Gabriel and The Apocalypse effort The Ghost Parade. I am certainly looking forward to hearing the band perform songs off the album live next month at Mill City Nights.

Recently picked up Big Calm by Morcheeba from the library. I almost forgot how much I love that album and trip hop music in general.

Music to check out

I definitely plan on writing a bit more about this latest comp in the TC Electropunk series in time when I have allowed the music to digest in my mind but I will say to go check it out.

Found some equally interesting music today on bandcamp. I particularly fond of the music by Tunguska Electronic Music Society, Living Light, and Adoration Destroyed.

My Current Favorite Songs

It's Thursday again. Time to share with my readers my current favorite songs at the moment. Got a mix of new and old songs this week. Today I have been on a Belinda Carlisle/The Go Go's kick so I had to add a song by Belinda Carlisle with her former band and as a solo artist. I absolutely love Belinda's solo work from the '80s. That is some seriously good pop music. Also been listening a lot of my Blutengel playlist I created.  Their song "Forever" is my current favorite song by the band. I strongly recommend checking out Kitten's "Church". That probably will end up as my favorite song of 2016. It is so freaking damn catchy. I don't think I will ever get off on my Autumn kick because I have "Of Moondrop Tears" from The Hating Tree on my playlist. Can hardly wait to see the band perform live again next month. The rest of the playlist is pretty good I think so listen to it in its entirety ;).

Albums that should be heard

Unfortunately there really isn't an album that I have been listening to for the past several days regularly that I haven't mentioned here on my blog so I thought instead post some of my favorite albums that definitely deserves to be heard by my readers.

Ever is the second EP (released late last year) by local act Tiny Deaths who opened up for Sleigh Bells last month at the Fine Line (great concert by the way). Just started listening to it again tonight. I am really enjoying a lot more than the first time I heard it earlier this year. If you like Phantogram, I definitely would recommend Tiny Deaths.

Together Alone is the first release by Danish synthwave group Softwave. It is also one of my favorite releases of 2016. The retro'80s vibe is strong in this effort.

Lately I have been listening to a lot of Heaven or Somewhere In Between by Kitten. Chloe Chaidez is my favorite singer right now. She just has an incredible voice. Her voice is so distinctive from all the pop stars out there nowadays. Chloe does not have a generic sound. Chloe has a real strong knack for creating pop hooks that gets into a person's head. The music on Heaven or Somewhere In Between is somewhere between retro '60s and modern synthpop. With songs this catchy, why Kitten's music hasn't been heard by more people mystifies me.

Evil As Good by Chamaeleon is one of the best EBM albums I have heard in the past five years. I discovered them earlier this year on bandcamp and really dug their mix of EBM which has both clean and distorted vocals.

Weekly Playlist for 10.10.16 - 10.16.16

Lately I have been deleting and starting over with a few of my playlists because I felt unsatisfied with the results. My current favorite playlist I recreated was my Blutengel playlist which is my featured playlist of the week. I really liked the results. I may tweak it from time to time like with a couple of other playlists.

Album Of The Week: Moonbathers by Delain

It was really difficult for me to pick my album of the week after a recent trip to The Electric Fetus a few days but in the end I chose Moonbathers by Delain for my Album Of The Week pick. I have been enjoying the hell out of the album since I bought it this past Saturday. I always liked Delain but after seeing them last year in Chicago with Nightwish they really made a big fan out of me. I don't know why it took me this long to buy one of their albums but I am glad I bought their new album.

All of the songs have great hooks. Lyrically this is the band's best work to date IMHO. I particularly am fond of the track "Chrysalis - The Last Breath" both lyrically and musically. The ballad is absolutely gorgeous, The heavier songs on the album are just as good. I love "Hands of Gold" which features Arch Enemy's Alyssa White-Gluz, "Fire With Fire", and "Scandal" in particular. Overall great album.

Weekly Playlist for 10.03.16 - 10.09.16

For this week's playlist, I chose my '90s playlist I Love the '90s. I have been listening to it quite a bit lately especially after going to Chicago to see Belly and Lush on two separate nights. As much as I love  '80s music, I love the diversity in the music from the '90s. Sure there was some crap music during that decade but there was also some fantastic music

Playlists:

Yesterday after work, I made a trip to the Electric Fetus to treat myself to some new  music. I ended up leaving the store with a used copy of  the soundtrack to 2046 (the Wong Kar Wai film), Moonbathers by Delain, and Venus Acoustic by former member of The Civil Wars Joy Williams. I have been enjoying my new music. Since 2046 isn't found on Spotify, here is a sample of the soundtrack which I love.

I can't believe I found the cd for $3. The last time I saw it at record store, it was as an import and about $26, not cheap.

The new Delain album is terrific. That band can really do no wrong in my book. As for the new EP by Joy Williams, as much as I like 2015's Venus, I honestly think her songs sounds even better as acoustic tracks.

I have updated my Guilty Pleasures and Futurepop playlists. I try to update some of my playlists so I don't get sick and tired of listening to them.
